Gifts to the Schools or the School District
The School Committee is grateful for gifts given to the school district by
community members, businesses and support organizations. Gifts are defined as
monetary, supplies, equipment, textbooks, service or other items that need be in line
with district needs and goals. Gifts to the school district become the property of
the school district and are deposited into a separate account, expended at the
discretion of the Superintendent and School Committee as provided by law (MGL
71.37A).
The acceptance or rejection of gifts, whether general or specific in nature,
offered to the Millis Public Schools is the prerogative of both the Millis School
committee and the Superintendent of Schools. Acceptance or rejection of proposed
gifts, whether general or specific in nature, shall be by vote of the Committee,
acting upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, except general gifts
to the school district or a particular school with a monetary value less than $1,000
may be accepted by the Superintendent of Schools, provided that the Superintendent
has determined that these gifts have educational value. General gifts with monetary
value in excess of $1000, or gifts given with a specific purpose, require an
affirmative vote of the School Committee to be accepted. Gifts given with a specific
purpose, if accepted by an affirmative vote of the committee, shall be used as
specified by the donor.
