Policy #5.14-Pregnant Students

The Millis Public Schools wishes to preserve educational opportunities for those students who become pregnant and/or take on parenting responsibilities. The Millis Public Schools does not discriminate against any student, or exclude any student from its education program or activity, including any class or extracurricular activity, on the basis of a student’s pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy or recovery therefrom, unless the student requests voluntarily to participate in a separate portion of a program or activity of the Millis Public Schools.

Pregnant students are permitted to remain in their regular classes and participate in extracurricular activities with non-pregnant students throughout their pregnancy, and after giving birth, they are permitted to return to the same academic and extracurricular program as before the leave.

The Millis Public Schools does not require a pregnant student to obtain the certification of a physician that the student is physically and emotionally able to continue in school. The Millis Public Schools will provide reasonable accommodations and home instruction for pregnant students to the extent such accommodations are provided to students with other temporary medical conditions.

Every effort will be made to see that the educational program of the student is disrupted as little as possible; that health counseling services, as well as instruction, are offered; that return to school after leave is encouraged; and that every opportunity to complete high school is provided. The Millis Public Schools will excuse a student’s absences because of pregnancy or childbirth for as long as the student’s doctor deems the absences medically necessary.

If a student has a complaint of discrimination or harassment based on pregnancy or parental status, he or she may file a complaint using Millis’ Harassment and Discrimination Grievance Procedures.
